1960's NICK FURY by Mitch Gerads

So this week at ComicTWART was my pick and you might notice I got kind of specific with it. The reason for that is I used my week here to live out my ultimate dream book/project.

A 1960's set, period spy book, starring Nick Fury has been that "Ultimate Dream Gig" for a good long while now. A Nick Fury story set in the sixties where Fury is a field agent working in this world of super heroes all in the background, all kinds of James Bond-ian awesome.

I picked Jim McCann as my dream gig writer for two reasons. 1. His books are so clean, clear, fun, and they read like a good character TV program (Seriously, pick up "Hawkeye and Mockingbird" if you haven't already) and 2. He's a huge Burn Notice fan, which as far as mood goes is exactly what I picture.

I honestly could go on about this for pages and you guys just want to see everyone's pretty art. If you ever need to kill time at a convention, find me and ask about this, ha!

Just so you know, I'd buy this, absolutely, without doubt. A nice 60;s style Fury, just what we need, not the one in the films. Make him old school once more.

Possibly my favourite Twart yet, thanks.

This has got such a brilliant feel to it - the 'zipatone' gives it a great 'period' look.

Gorgeous and it does nail the '60s - the simple white shirt, the skinny tie and, most notably, Fury's lean physique. You can easily imagine him poppin' a few rounds into a Hydra agent and then, after knotting his tie and putting on his suit jacket, casually strolling into the Top of Sixes for a Surf and Turf dinner with The Contessa.

I can't agree more. Why in general is the mainstream so afraid of doing period pieces? Why do we have to update and modernize everything? Fury and Bond are two great examples. Its all about fighting that evil organization (whether its HYDRA, SPECTRE, SMERSH, KGB, etc) And for period pieces you can't beat the slick style and aesthetic of the 60's. Just look at the vibe a series like Casanova casts. I think recent period pieces in tv and comics have started to justify more potential to stay true to the original source. Look at Mad Men or the like. Its time they do a punisher movie with a true vietnam origin and relaunch bond as an actual 60's espionage flick. Baby steps.
