BLACK BEETLE by Mr.Hawthorne

Francesco's pulp comic work is classic. Simple as that.

Francesco gave us an early heads up to his selection. SO, last week I started a digitally painted version of the piece below. I got hit with some deadline stuff, and wouldn't be able to finish that painted version, so I started an inked version.

I got the above about 2/3's done when I saw that Tom, being the brilliant bastard that he is, had a VERY similar idea to what I had begun. :)

So I did this one.

Enjoy.

simply amazing, Mike. Both of these are great, but that second one (that splattering rain effect is really effective)just makes my jaw hit the floor.

Agreed, this is stunning. The perspective makes this a pure potential energy riot.

HolyCRAP! Not one, but two Black Beetles?!! You rock hard, my friend :)
And get even more appreciation because I know you had a rough week with lots going on.

The first one has so much story in there: the two guys' expression, being interrupted like that by BB while they were beating the third guy on the ground, baseball bat still sitting there, leaning against the wall... so much story :)
The second one is just plain 100% coolness and kickassery juice. WOW!

Are these both digital?

Grazie, cumpa' :)

Thanks everyone.

I love what Francesco, and wanted to do right by him and the character.

Francesco - Glad you like them, man. I really wanted to paint this thing, but it wasn't in the cards.

Neither is digital. The first is pen/brush and ink.

The second is white acrylic on black paper, with some color pencil for the rain.

It was my pleasure to work on this, bro :)

These are both textbook examples of the use of light and shadow. They frigging blow me away.
Beautiful stuff.

Goodness! That first one, if finished, would have been incredible. But the second one... Goodness! I can't stop looking at it.

Thanks guys! You all warm my cold, dead heart.

Especially you Tom. Love it when you talk dirty to me ;)

You know, I think you Andy and I are all alum from Grendel R, W, & B.... no? I loved your art with the fat guy that Grendel takes out :)

Best,
Mike

Mike, you're insane! These are excellent! Absolutely love the storytelling technique of the first one and the noir lighting of the second one is tops! The belt on that is absolutely perfect.

I love that top one - the devil's grin he's wearing. Cool. That's a cover shot, for sure.

Overachiever. :P

Seriously, Mike, I don't know how you manage to do it, week-in, week-out. Always kicking ass, even when you do TWO freaking pieces!

Kinda dropped the ball, and my stumach, on the J. RECON piece this week thanks to the g'damed stumach flu but I hope to make up for it before too long.
