THE ROCKETEER by Francesco Francavilla
This went a little out of hands, not a good thing when I have a pretty busy week on sequentials like this week (I have been drawing this in between pages since Monday), but my love for the character and respect for the great Dave Stevens took over.
When I heard about the topic for this week, last Friday, I had 3 ideas popping up in my head. I went with the "quickest" one, which was a remake of an old composition I did a few years ago and never got around finishing it. You can see the "starting" pencils here, along with my memories of the late Dave Stevens (I had the honor to meet him and chat with him years ago in SD with the good friend and super talented Jim Steranko - speaking of hanging out with the "cool kids").
Of course, click on the above image for a closer look.
I may tackle the other two ideas when I get some spare time.
Cheers,
Francesco

OK, now you're officially being ridiculous.
I saw these pencils from a while back and I'm glad to see the piece finally finished.
What made you decide to switch to a WWI era fighter aircraft?
Lovely piece, Francesco! I can't decide which I like more, the terrific way you spotted your blacks or the color pallet you've been using lately. Gorgeous on both counts.
Jesus Christ, Francesco - how is anyone supposed to follow that?!
This is, of course, fantastic. And I agree with Steve - the colour choices you've made here are spot on. Great action, great storytelling - just all round great!
talk about above and beyond, you school us all francesco!
That's lovely. Full of old-timey adventure goodness.
Killer subject matter as well, Francesco ;)
Everything about this is fantastic, the mood, the color palette, the action, the adventure.
It's got everything a Rocketeer story should have!
Thank you all :D
Ron: overlapping wings are just cooler ;) Plus the original composition was a little stiff.
Dan: quit that and pot yours already! ;)
Mitch: hehe, I panicked a bit yesterday when I saw your awesome piece... with a ww1 plane! :)
I'm with everyone else, great color choices. And the drawing's a gas.
Terrific work.
Amazing! :)

Oh lord,... you guys are killing me with your talent! WOW! This piece is just incredible. Thanks so much for fitting this in between all your other wonderful work!
Awesome stuff, Francesco!
I love this one, Francesco. You make a print of it, I will buy it, hands down.
Thank you so much, everyone, you guys are the sweetest :)
Evan: can't do print for sale of this for obvious legal reason, but I have no problem at all in gifting you one since you are such a swell guy ;) :D
Cheers,
Francesco
Wow you really went all out, Francesco!
What a wonderfully pulpy shot! So great!!
Well, as mentioned, it got a little out of hands ;) as most likely it will the next assignment, now that I know what is about... :P
Thanks, Chris :)
Cheers,
Francesco
Thanks for the new desktop!
Thank you, Paul :) I loved the Rocketeer "SAD" bust you have on your blog :)
